The eight county area of the Florida Suncoast, which encompases 4,021,391 persons, has experienced a population growth of 17.4% over the past ten years, from 2000 - 2010. The Suncoast region's growth rate is just under Florida's growth rate of 17.6% for the same time period. Lee county has grown the quickest at 40.3% whereas Monroe County has had a population decline of 8.2% respectively. Unemployment for the Suncoast region has increased significantly as well from the low 3% range back in the year 2000 to over 10.6% as of 3rd quarter 2011 (see unemployment rate chart below).

In terms of workforce occupation distribution, the three highest employing sectors are (1) office / administrative support occupations at 18.2%, (2) sales occupations at 12.5%, and (3) food preparation / food service occupations at 12.5%. Conversely, the least employing sectors are (1) architecture / engineering occupations at 1.1%, (2) life, physical & social science occupations at 0.9% and (3) farming, fishery & forestry occupations at 0.6%.
